Film Review: Moonlight

On the 14th of December, Broadway held a private screening for the premier of independent film ‘Moonlight‘ directed by Barry Jenkins. Set in Miami, Florida Moonlight looks at the life of a boy named Chiron. This American drama really hits your emotions as you grow attached to Chiron, watching him face difficulties. It’ll have you reaching for the tissues to dry your eyes. Because it looks at real life possibilities of people that are potentially going through the events that occur throughout the film, it’s hard not to feel some sort of empathy to the characters.

Based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney, the film stars many talented actors and performers. American Horror Story fans will recognise André Holland who plays Kevin, American musical recording artist, actress and model Janelle Monáe plays Teresa, the girlfriend of Tuan, who is played by Mahershala Ali. Chiron’s mother, played by Naomie Harris, who stared in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest and At Worlds End, has a huge part in this film as to why Chiron could be the way that he is. A very timid and withdrawn child.

In Moonlight we see Chiron grow up and face struggles and obstacles throughout his life, this is where the attachment may come into play with this particular character. Because you’re watching him grow you create somewhat of a bond with him and come to relate to some of the things he goes through as he’s going through real life scenarios. You almost want to reach into the screen to help and protect him in his younger years. We see him start off as a little boy known as ‘Little’ played by Alex Hibbert. We then see him in high school, played by Ashton Sanders. He is then shown as a strong and tough adult, who’s created a different life for himself, who goes by the name ‘Black’ played by Trevante Rhodes.

This film is set for many awards for the upcoming year and is due for release in early 2017! It’s a must see, the way it plays out and how the actors portray their characters is executed brilliantly. It will have you wanting to know what happened next and keep you on the edge of your seat!

We won’t give too much away because you should check it out for yourselves!
