The Victoria Leisure Centre in Nottingham is a new 3,100m2 public facility built around the retained 1896 Victoria Bath’s clock tower. In consideration of coordination issues between new and old and the resolution of level changes associated with a new pedestrianised public realm strategy, the new building’s principal elements comprise a ground level plinth, into which the pools, foyer and café are set, and a cross laminated engineered timber super- structure that rises up over the main pool. The configuration of this structure addresses environmental and day lighting considerations, as well as controlling the important relation- ship between pool and public realm
